Sunderland 1-1 Wycombe Wanderers

A late Josh Maja leveller denied Wycombe Wanderers a famous victory over Sunderland at The Stadium Of Light.

The Chairboys had taken the lead through Fred Onyedinma on 66 minutes after weathering an early second half onslaught of corners from the hosts.

Despite conceding on 83 minutes, a draw was an excellent result for Wycombe against a Sunderland side who were playing in the Premier League just two seasons ago.

After the game, I spoke to a delighted and rather hoarse Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth on BBC Three Counties Radio:

Wycombe Wanderers 2-1 Burton Albion

Wycombe came out on top of a close encounter to secure their first home league win of the season against Burton Albion.

The Chairboys led 2-0 at half-time following a comfortable first 45 minutes which saw a penalty cooly converted by the recalled Joe Jacobson and a trademark finish from Adebayo Akinfenwa, his 200th goal in English football.

Brewers manager Nigel Clough switched to a 4-4-2 formation for the second half, pushing Lucas Akins further forward which resulted in a well worked goal on ’47 minutes for Marvin Sordell. Despite a much improved Burton performance, Wycombe ground out a vital win to move out of the relegation zone whilst leapfrogging their opponents in the table.

Fleetwood Town 1-1 Wycombe Wanderers

A windy affair ended in a draw at The Highbury Stadium as The Chairboys fought back in the second half.

The hardy Wycombe fans who made the long midweek journey would have been buoyed by the display of the talismanic Adebayo Akinfenwa, who has put his goalscoring drought behind him with three goals in as many games.

After the game I spoke with the Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth for BBC Three Counties Radio:

The Lowdown On Alex Samuel

Wycombe Wanderers have signed forward Alex Samuel on a six month contract. The 22 year old free agent was released by Stevenage at the end of last season, after making 22 appearances during an injury hit campaign.

Chairboys manger Gareth Ainsworth admitted the low key signing was “unlikely to trouble the Sky Sports ticker tape” but he will be hoping Samuel can replicate the success of Scott Kashket who signed a similar deal at Adams Park in 2016.

So who is Alex Samuel? To find out more about him I spoke to BBC Three Counties summariser for Stevenage, Deano Thompson:

Wycombe Wanderers 0-0 Blackpool

Wycombe Wanderers got their first point of the season after an entertaining scoreless draw against Blackpool at a sun kissed Adams Park.

The Chairboys had the better of the chances from open play but crucially failed to convert any of them with Paris Cowan-Hall guilty of spurning the best opportunity with two minutes on the clock.

However, it was Blackpool that came closest to breaking the deadlock with an excellent first half free-kick from Chris Taylor that struck the angle of post and bar, with Wycombe goalkeeper Ryan Allsop beaten.

Overall, it was a solid performance and a clean sheet for the Chairboys with the only cloud in the clear blue skies being the red card for right back Michael Harriman for two yellow cards, the second of which looked very harsh indeed.

After the game, I spoke to the Wanderers manager, Gareth Ainsworth, for BBC Three Counties Radio:

Is Ainsworth heading for the ZZ Top?

Five games to go and Wycombe Wanderers are currently occupying an automatic promotion place. Ahead of the trip to Yeovil, I caught up with Gareth Ainsworth, where amongst other things, we talked about his beard:

GA Beard

Beard today. Wycombe fans will be hoping it won’t be gone tomorrow

Landing planes in tricky conditions and haunted houses – Luke O’Nien talked me through the recent Chairboys squad development day, plus Harry Kane’s dubious goal and the location of his last away goal:

I also spoke with Marcus Bean about the run in, pep talks for Jabo Ibhere and what could happen if he scores another pivotal goal this season:
