Wycombe Wanderers snuck past League 2 Northampton Town 7-6 on penalties to progress into the second round of the League Cup for the first time in seven years.
The match was tied at 1-1 after 90 very entertaining minutes in which the Chairboys looked to be fluffing their lines in front of goal again. The breakthrough came ten minutes into the second half with a well worked move being emphatically headed home by Randell Williams and the home side visibly grew in confidence.
However, The Cobblers stuck to their guns and forced their way back into the tie with a late leveller from substitute Sam Hoskins which came shortly after Wycombe goalkeeper, Yves Ma-Kalambay, had saved a penalty.
The big keeper was the hero again in the shoot out, keeping out Jordan Turnbulls penalty which allowed Adam El-Abd to slam home the winner in front of a sparse Adams Park crowd.
After the game, I spoke to the Wanderers manager, Gareth Ainsworth:
If, like Gareth, you would like to know who Wycombe could face in the second round, here are the numbers for the Southern section of the draw which takes place on Thursday evening.
