Wycombe Wanderers 0 Tranmere Rovers 2

Three games into the League season and the first taste of defeat. Back in pre season I think most fans would have taken a six point return from the first three fixtures, which on paper at least looked a tough prospect. The manner of those two victories contributed to the air of disappointment that hung over Adams Park immediately after the final whistle against Tranmere Rovers. However, I think that Tranmere turned in a classic smash and grab away performance to take the points and The Chairboy’s performance would have ranked amongst their strongest at home last term. Rovers were relegated from League One on the final day of last season and in Jason Koumas possess a player that really should be playing at a higher level than League Two. Their fluid 4-4-1-1 formation looked very solid and the brilliantly named Max Power caused havoc across the pitch along with Danny Woodards who I though was superb as an attacking right back. Cole Stockton worked hard as the lone front player and took his chance when it came in style with Power equally as ruthless in punishing a slip by Aaron Pierre.

Wycombe appeared to run out of ideas against a solid rearguard and the ball just wasn’t dropping from them in the Rovers penalty area. Still, the home fans should take encouragement from the fine display of visiting goalkeeper Owain Fon Williams who had to be at his best to protect his clean sheet.  Onwards to Stevenage!

Here are the post match thoughts of Gareth Ainsworth

It was good to hear from new chairman Andrew Howard, who spoke with Geoff Doyle on the Three Counties Sports show on Monday. Just as Gareth has a massive task to turn around the fortunes of Wycombe Wanderers on the pitch, the task facing Andrew off the pitch is just as big.
