Newport County 0 Wycombe Wanderers 2

Saturday was a thoroughly enjoyable day out in South Wales.  It was great to be back behind the mic and commentating on some proper football, a task made much easier by an excellent performance by The Chairboys.  Take a listen to the action here…

A fantastic result to start the season and a clinical first half performance was backed up by a resilient defensive team display to see the game out in the second half.

Centre backs Alfie Mawson and Aaron Pierre were superb, especially taking into consideration that there was not ten competitive appearances between them before the game.  The back four was completed by Sido Jombati and Joe Jacobson who were both a marked improvement on last seasons full backs.

Sam Wood celebrated being back in midfield (and his birthday) with an excellent performance and an assist for the vital second goal.  Paris Cowan Hall grew into the game and drew countless fouls which was an important part in breaking up the play in the second half as The Chairboys killed the game off.  Peter Murphy took his goal well and turned in an assured performance alongside young Max Kretzschmar in central midfield.

Paul Hayes and Matt McClure worked tirelessly up front and epitomised the team spirit that saw Wycombe take the points in a tough game.  Following wins on the opening day of the last two seasons no one will be getting carried away following this result but the signs are encouraging.  Here is a post match round up and the thoughts of Gareth Ainsworth with myself and Geoff Doyle.

Many thanks as ever to Keith Cummings for the audio.
